Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who are your favorite writers?
A: Judy Blume, George Eliot, Jane Austen, Philip Pullman, Larry McMurtry, Paula Danziger, Alistair Horne, Charles Dickens, Katherine Applegate, Katherine Paterson, William Manchester, Marcel Proust. For starters.
Q: Do you have any pets?
A: An adorable, garbage-eating, stick-obsessed, humpy lab named Finny, age 4. Also a lumpish, finger-biting, sniffy hamster named Moonbeam, age 1. Well, Moonbeam supposedly belongs to my children, but I'm the one who ends up feeding him and cleaning his cage, because of my concern for his health and well-being. I'm such a sucker.
Q: Where can I see your husband's beautiful paintings?
A: Well, funny you should ask. He happens to have a website: Jacobcollinspaintings.com.
Q: Did you like the movie of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants?
A: Yes, I really did. I thought the acting was mostly excellent. The photography was beautiful. It was unabashedly emotional. I loved that.
Q: Is there going to be a sequel?
A: Amazingly, yes. As of June 2007 they are filming in Santorini, Greece. It's supposed to come out in August 2008.
Q: Do your children read your books?
A: They are still a bit young for them. In addition, my sons say they are "girly." My daughter, who is a girl, doesn't mind that they are "girly," but she just turned six and can't really read yet.
Q: Do you have any hobbies?
A: I play the cello at a professional level and I take pictures for National Geographic. Okay, no I don't. I do enjoy eating and sleeping quite a bit.
Q: Of all the characters you've written about, who's your favorite?
A: You always ask me that, and I never give a straight answer. Because secretly my favorite is Carmen. No, it's Alice. No, it's Bee. It's actually Kostos. Maybe it's Paul. Hmm.
Q: Who is your favorite of your brothers?
A: I'm not answering that one either.
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: I get them from my own experiences, from people I love, from books, movies, songs, poems, stories that people tell me. When I am perched at my computer, full of virtue and good intentions, they often fail to show. When I'm half-asleep and too lazy to get a pen and paper they arrive in full glory. Or at least I fuzzily remember them as having seemed glorious at the time.
Q: Do you like lentils?
A: Okay, nobody has ever asked me that. But in fact, I do.
